M
ore and more colleges
and universities have recognized the need to provide mental and behavioral
health services to their students as an
integral part of supporting students and
helping them succeed in and out of
the classroom. From therapy sessions
to relaxation rooms to apps, Maryland
colleges have upped their game.
Award-Winning Programs
Last year, Goucher College’s
Student Counseling Center received
the 2025 Excellence in Mental Health
and Well-Being Award from Insight Into
Academia magazine, the largest and
oldest diversity and inclusion publica-
tion in higher education, because of
its robust mental health and well-being
services, programs and events that
include all campus members.
Tim Moslener, director of student
counseling at Goucher College, says
that one of the keys to raising awareness of the center’s services is partnering with other departments and organizations. “We coordinate with the athletic department, student organizations,
faculty, staff and Goucher’s student
engagement office. It’s important for us
to get out of the center and engage with
students all over campus,” he says.
Moslener recognizes that there is
still a stigma about reaching out for
mental health assistance.
“Asking for help is hard, so when
we are seen on campus as part of
the Goucher community, it helps break
down some of those barriers. If I spot
a student wearing a T-shirt featuring a
band I know, I might approach them
and start a conversation about music.
It makes them more comfortable and
sees us as human beings trying to
help.”
One of the primary services that
the counseling center provides is oneon-one, short-term therapy. “Typically,
students come for an entire semester,
but everyone is different. A student
