Meet the Baltimore area’s most intriguing
movers and shakers of 2025
Shannetta Griffin
63, executive director and CEO, Maryland Aviation Administration
Shannetta Griffin is focused on building Maryland’s aviation transportation for the future, while growing the next
generation of professionals.
In 1985, Griffin became the first Black woman to graduate from the University of Toledo’s civil engineering
program. She went on to become the first Black woman to serve as the associate administrator of airports for
the Federal Aviation Administration from 2021 to 2025. She is six months into her current role with the Maryland Aviation Administration.
“Even though I am the first, I won’t be the last and that goes back to my purpose and how I am grooming the
next engineers, directors, or what that looks like,” Griffin said.
With over 40 years of experience in the aviation industry, Griffin said her focus is on building robust, resilient
aviation infrastructure that promotes the growth of Maryland residents and businesses.
“The things that we think about today from a technology perspective or innovation and creativity will tell
what this looks like in the future,” Griffin said. “From an airport perspective, that is our driver — how do we
make this airport better for our growing community and contribute to the growth of the industries that want
to be in Maryland.”
Griffin said she is most proud of her son, 28, and her daughter, 33, as they motivate her every day to seek new,
innovative ways to make the world a better place.
