Anne Arundel County hospitals rank in state’s top 10

Anne Arundel County’s two major
medical centers rank in the top 10 hospitals in Maryland on U.S. News and World
Report’s 2024 “Best Hospitals” list. Of
more than 60 hospitals in the state, Baltimore Washington Medical Center in
Glen Burnie ranks at No. 5, while Luminis
Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in
Annapolis ranks No. 8. The 2024 report is
the most recent one.
Baltimore Washington Medical Center
is in the University of Maryland Medical
System, specializing in emergency, acute,
medical-surgical and critical care. It’s one
of three UMMS hospitals in the state to
rank in the top five, behind Baltimore’s
University of Maryland Medical Center at
No. 2 and Towson’s University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center at No. 3.
With an operating revenue of $527
million in fiscal year 2023, the medical
center has 307 beds and more than 3,000
employees on staff, including 1,200 medical providers. Every year, the facility has
around 18,000 hospital admissions, with
about 66,000 emergency department
visits.
With its No. 5 ranking, the medical
center was recognized as high-performing in colon cancer and lung cancer
surgeries, as well as procedures related to
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
pneumonia, heart attack, heart failure,
diabetes and kidney failure.
Kathleen McCollum is the hospital’s
president and chief executive officer.
Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical
Center is a health system that also owns
Doctors Community Medical Center,
in Prince George’s County, as well as J.

Kent McNew Family Medical Center and
Pathways Alcohol & Drug Treatment
Center in Annapolis. Luminis Health also
has four outpatient surgery centers in
the state, including one in Annapolis and
another in Pasadena.
Located on a 57-acre campus, Luminis
Health Anne Arundel Medical Center
has more than 6,900 employees and 1,680
medical staff. In the most recent fiscal
year, providers saw roughly 140,900
emergency department visitors and
admitted more than 32,800 people to the
hospital. It has an operating budget of
$680 million.
The medical center received high-performance recognition in colon cancer
surgery, lung cancer surgery, procedures
relating to cardiology, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, and pneumonia, as
well as hip replacement and knee replacement from U.S. News and World Report.
Additionally, it received its third
Magnet designation in nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2024.
The hospital system is led by CEO
Victoria W. Bayless, and Luminis Health
Anne Arundel Medical Center is led by
President Sherry Perkins. Christine Frost
is the hospital’s chief nursing officer.
