Spinal Surgeries
Continued from page 4
continue to train our medical residents
on conventional approaches to spine
surgery so that they know how to
recognize unusual situations and can
effectively manage any scenario,” he
says.
Implant and Fusion Surgeries
Optimized; Other Advances to
Come
Besides robotics and software for
performing the spine surgeries, advances in the implant and fusion products
themselves have been practical to the
point of optimizing them for “highrisk” patients. Bone graft substitutes
are advancing, as well as the use of
biologically active materials designed
to enhance bone healing in certain situations.
Chryssikos says spine surgeons are
working more closely with endocrinology in using newer therapies to improve
bone quality before surgery. This has
improved outcomes. “This approach
can improve the quality of the bone we
are operating on and may reduce the
risk of fixation-related complications
and delayed or incomplete healing after
surgery – especially in patients with
osteoporosis and other risk factors.”
He says other technologies like stem
cells and disc regeneration are part
of an active field that is still evolving.
Early clinical efforts look promising, but
he and his colleagues are remaining
cautious. “The spine is a mechanically
demanding environment, and we need
robust long-term data demonstrating meaningful and durable benefit,”
Chryssikos emphasizes.
He concludes that despite the bells
and whistles of software platforms,
robot arms, fusion techniques and preoperative treatments, the patient results
are what count. “The best outcomes
come from coordinated care – surgeon, primary care physician and other
specialists working together, with the
patient at the center of the team.”
