Spill the Beans
Clean up any spills on floors or
countertops as quickly as possible.
These are slipping hazards, especially
if they are oily. Residue can be left on
the surface if not cleaned properly.
Shulman says the kitchen has many
fall risks. The numerous body movements required to cook a single meal
are a set-up for falls. The short burst
of steps and turns when moving from
stove to sink to refrigerator are a challenge to balance and gait.
See the Light
Install bright indoor lighting. Consider
under-counter lighting in kitchens to
illuminate workstations. Connect lights
to the first switch in the room, so that
you don’t have to be feeling around
in the dark to find the lamp switch.
In fact, trying to walk anywhere in the
dark is probably not a good idea. That
includes going to the bathroom in the
middle of the night. Have guidelights
or night lights to help you avoid tripping over anything, especially the dog.
During the day, Shulman says other
things like multi-tasking while walking,
talking on the phone or texting takes
your concentration away from walking
safely, inviting a fall.
Emergency 911
Keep emergency call buttons and
your cell phone within reach from the
get-go. If you fall down or feel like
you are about to fall, press the button
immediately. Another common trigger
for falls is low blood pressure that
causes dizziness and lightheadedness.
Look for apps that help you get
help, if you fall and can’t get up. Some
apps sense your falls and immediately call 911, and others allow you to
identify when you actually need help.
Personalize it to meet your needs and
don’t be afraid to use it.
