come whenever you liked during the time
it was served. The food was surprisingly
good. As a single person traveling alone,
this was the best part of the trip. We were
seated to fill up the tables, so I met many
interesting people this way.
The observation car was a nice change
from my compartment because it was
large and open. Going through the Rocky
Mountains all the best views seemed to
be on the other side of the train from my
compartment.
We left Chicago at two in the afternoon
and traveled through Illinois and Iowa
farmland once out of the city. During the
night we crossed Nebraska, and I awoke
on the plains outside Denver, Colorado.
We had a short break there and then a
long slow climb over the Rockies. From
Grand Junction we dropped down to Salt
Lake City. During the second night we
crossed Utah and into Reno, Nevada by
morning.
Then began the climb over the Sierra
Nevada. Although it was early May there
had been some recent snowfall. After we
left Sacramento, the train turned toward
San Francisco Bay and followed the
shoreline most of the way into Emeryville.
Those passengers going on to San
Francisco got on a bus to go over the
Bay Bridge into the city. Others were
transferring to other trains to go either
north or south. A friend picked me up to
take me home.
Tips for next time
Book as far ahead as possible. Amtrak
prices go up closer to the travel date and
seats can be sold out. One of their best
deals is the USA Rail Pass which lets you
take your trip in 10 rides within 30 days
for $499, which I would like to try.
Travel light. There is not much room
for luggage in your compartment or near
your seat, and there is no room at all if it
is a commuter train. If you opt for a berth
and are traveling with another person,
opt for a roomette with its own bathroom.
These are more spacious than the other
roomettes.
Bring your own food, especially if you
are in coach class or have dietary restrictions. The food offered in the dining car
is wonderful, but the food offered in the
cafe is minimal and not very healthy. The
times the cafe is open are not always
convenient.
Would I do it again? You bet! Train travel is the most relaxing way to go!
