Salisbury University recently concluded its Centennial celebrations during Spring Commencement, joining with 2026 graduates in looking toward the future.
More Than a Degree: Salisbury University’s
Vision for the Next Generation
SALISBURY, MD—For many students, college starts with a campus visit.
They walk through residence halls,
peek into classrooms, and picture themselves in the middle of it all. Families ask
practical questions about costs, majors,
and career outcomes. Students often
ask quieter questions:
Will I belong here? Will I find my people? Will this place help me figure out
who I want to become?
Those questions matter, because
college is about more than earning a
degree.
College is about pursuing passions,
building confidence, discovering who
you are, and finding a path forward.
At Salisbury University, that belief is
shaping the next chapter of an institution
that has spent more than a century helping students build meaningful futures. A
newly unveiled strategic plan outlines an
ambitious future for SU, with a renewed
focus on what matters most: handson experiences, meaningful mentorship,
and opportunities that help students
discover their purpose and build a future
that fits their goals.
At SU, students work alongside faculty on research projects. They complete internships with local businesses,
schools, health care organizations, and
government agencies. Future teachers
work with children in area classrooms.
Future entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to donors. Future authors
publish their writing, and future artists
display their creations across campus.
Long before graduation, many students are already building résumés,
professional networks, and real-world
experience.
“I’ve surprised myself with how much
I’ve done at SU,” said junior psychology major Allison Yeager. “Coming here,
meeting people who are doing amazing
things and believe in me, too—it makes
me excited for what’s next.”
A college education should open
doors. But the best college experiences
do something more: They help students
discover doors they never knew existed.
When Allison arrived at SU, she had
a major in mind but wasn’t entirely sure
where it would lead.
Through a supportive community,
campus involvement, and opportunities
outside the classroom, she began to see
new possibilities for herself.
Experiences like Allison’s are exactly
what SU hopes to make even more common in the years ahead.
The University’s new strategic plan
builds on that vision, ensuring more
students have opportunities to learn by
doing, explore their interests, and discover what’s possible.
For students weighing where to
spend the next four years, having peo-
ple who believe in them can make all the
difference.
At large institutions, it’s easy to
worry about getting lost in the crowd.
Meanwhile, SU students describe professors who know their names, mentors who help them navigate important
decisions, and classmates who quickly
become lifelong friends.
“What’s made me most proud to
be an SU student is the people,” said
David Liburdi ’24. “You hear so many
wonderful things about the community
here, and it’s so cool that I can say it’s
true. I’ve had so many experiences with
people who genuinely care and want
you to succeed. I think that’s the point
of college.”
SU is the kind of place where students are encouraged to raise their
hands, try something new, apply for the
internship, join the club, run for office,
or pursue the idea a little outside their
comfort zone.
And when they do, they often discover they’re capable of more than they
imagined.
Whether they’re conducting research,
working alongside doctors in clinical
placements, supporting nonprofit organizations, participating in internships, or
just checking out a new club, students
gain opportunities to apply what they’re
learning while they’re still in college.
New opportunities continue to emerge
through partnerships with organizations
such as NASA and the Baltimore Orioles,
giving students the chance to work on
real-world projects, learn directly from
industry leaders, and explore careers
ranging from science and technology to
sports, business, and beyond.
Those experiences help answer one
of the biggest questions families have
about higher education: What happens
after graduation?
For SU students, the answer often
begins long before graduation arrives.
They leave with professional experience,
lasting relationships, and confidence—
to step into a new job, continue their
education, move to a new city, study
