SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT
Salisbury. Forever.
A Century of Promise.
A Future in Motion.
SALISBURY, MD---For 100 years,
Salisbury University has been a place
where futures take flight. What began
with 115 students training to be
teachers on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
has grown into much more: a thriving,
nationally recognized university with
thousands of students, innovative new
facilities, a global alumni network, and
a world of opportunity.
This year, SU celebrates its
Centennial with the theme “Salisbury.
Forever.”—a promise that honors the
past, embraces the present, and looks
boldly to the future. As the University
moves into a new century, students
will write the next chapter.
“Salisbury gave me the skills and
opportunities to grow personally and
professionally,” said alumnus Tyler
Gibson ’16. “And for that, I’m forever
grateful.”
The growth students experience
at SU is reflected in the skyline of the
campus itself: One hundred years ago,
students learned, slept and dined in
a single building. Now, the sprawling
campus is home to seven academic
schools and colleges, top-notch
athletic facilities including the Sea
Gull Stadium, one of the nation’s Top
25 best college libraries, an awardwinning dining hall, and a nationally
recognized arboretum. Nearly 70
academic programs and opportunities
global study prepare students to thrive
in an ever-changing world.
Yet,
amid
expansion
and
recognition, Salisbury remained true
to its earliest values: close facultystudent relationships, experiential
learning, and a strong sense of
community. That balance between
bold growth and steadfast roots has
carried SU into its Centennial year.
“SU helped me find myself,” said
Danitza Verano Roman, a political
science major who speaks English as
a second language. “The one thing I
will always remember about SU is the
people—the great faculty and staff
who have given me opportunities I
never thought I’d have.”
Across
campus,
Centennial
celebrations are more than ceremonies;
they’re reminders that the story of SU
has always been about people with
bold ideas, big dreams, and a belief
that tomorrow can be brighter.
Take Holloway Hall, SU’s first
building. For nearly a century, its Social
Room has been a hub for campus
traditions, from holiday candlelight
gatherings to alumni receptions. In
honor of the Centennial, the room
has been lovingly restored, its cherry
walls gleaming again, ready for a new
generation of memories. Just outside,
a new Centennial Plaza was designed
as a welcoming gateway that will host
gatherings for the next hundred years.
SU’s
Centennial
celebrates
milestones, but also shines a spotlight
on what makes SU such a special place
for those who call the campus home.
Students dive into research alongside
professors, compete on championship
athletics teams, and bring ideas to life
through internships, service, and study
abroad. They’re joining a legacy of
impact that stretches from classrooms
on the Eastern Shore to communities
across the globe.
Centennial events capture that
energy in ways both meaningful
and fun. A spring Day of Service
will mobilize students, faculty and
staff, and alumni to give back. Local
partners have joined the celebration—
Island Creamery created a Centennial
ice cream flavor, while Evolution Craft
Brewing Co. debuted ’Bury Brew.
Exhibits, performances, and reunions
are filling the year with moments of
pride and connection.

chapters, they’ll study in cutting-edge
labs, launch ideas through business
programs, and learn from faculty who
are leaders in their fields. They’ll carry
forward a tradition of community that
has defined SU since 1925. They’ll
walk through the Centennial Plaza,
knowing they are part of a story that
began long before them—and one that
will continue long after.
Over 100 years, SU’s journey has
been one of growth, resilience, and
purpose. The Centennial celebrates
how far SU has come, but even more,
it is a promise forward: to expand
opportunity, to nurture belonging, and
to prepare tomorrow makers to shape
the century ahead.
“SU isn’t just a place,” said alumna
Gabriella Grigsby ’23. “It’s a home
filled with intentionality, genuineness,
and acceptance. It meets you where
you are and encourages you to
become the best version of yourself.”
Wherever Sea Gulls soar, the spirit
of Salisbury soars with them. The first
100 years were just the beginning.
