Who are Anne Arundel County’s state and federal representatives?

In addition to county government, and
Annapolis and Highland Beach municipal governments, Anne Arundel County
residents are also represented by teams
of state and federal lawmakers.
STATE-LEVEL
REPRESENTATION
The Maryland General Assembly,
made up of the 141-member House of
Delegates and 47-member state Senate,
meets in the State House in downtown
Annapolis every year for a 90-day session starting in January. Special sessions
can also be called throughout the year.
Six senators and 16 delegates represent districts that include Anne Arundel
County in the General Assembly. Currently, 11 of these delegates are Democrats and five are Republicans. Five of
the Anne Arundel senators are Democrats, and one is a Republican.
All members of the Maryland General
Assembly serve four-year terms, with the
next election coming up in November.
The speaker of the House of Delegates, Joseline Peña-Melnyk, is a Democrat representing Anne Arundel and
Prince George’s counties.

FEDERAL
REPRESENTATION
Two U.S. House of Representatives
districts include Anne Arundel County:
District 3 and District 5. All members of
the U.S. House serve two-year terms and
are up for election in November.
The northern half of the county, in
District 3, is in Democratic Rep. Sarah
Elfreth’s district. Elfreth, who lives in
Annapolis, used to represent the area in
the state Senate before she was elected
to Congress in January 2025. Her district also includes Howard County and
parts of Carroll County. Elfreth is running for reelection.
The southern part of the county, in

District 5, is represented by Steny
Hoyer, a Democrat who chose not to run
for reelection this year. Hoyer has been
in the U.S. House since 1981 and, for
about two decades, was the secondhighest-ranking Democrat in the House.
Democratic Prince George’s County
Del. Adrian Boafo and Republican Chris
Chaffee are running for the seat. District
5 also includes Calvert, Charles and St.
Mary’s counties and parts of Prince
George’s County.
Maryland’s two U.S. senators are
Democrats Chris Van Hollen and Angela
Alsobrooks. Van Hollen has been in the
Senate since 2017 and was previously in
the House from 2003 to 2017. Alsobrooks joined the Senate in January
2025 and was previously the county executive of Prince George’s County.
