County Executive Steuart Pittman is
the top-ranking official in Anne Arundel
County, which is operating on a $2.57
billion budget in fiscal year 2027.
Pittman, a Democrat, is balanced by
the legislative branch, a seven-member
County Council, which includes four
Democrats and three Republicans.
The council meets twice a month and
holds one work session per month in
Annapolis, the seat of the county and
state governments.
This year, each County Council member will make about $45,000, with the
exception of the chair, who makes about
$50,000, and the vice chair, who makes
$46,000. The previous council set the
salaries. Some of the council members
also have jobs in the private sector.
Pittman, who was first elected in 2018
and reelected in 2022, was paid $142,000
in fiscal year 2025. The council approved
a 27% raise for the next county executive, bringing the position’s salary to
$180,000. Pittman is term-bound and
cannot seek reelection this November.
The Office of the County Executive
handles executive leadership, including
proposing a budget to the council and
drafting legislation to be introduced to
the council by way of the council chair.
All seven council seats and the county
executive’s office are up for election this
year. Annapolis Democrat Lisa Rodvien
and Crofton Republican Shannon Leadbetter are not seeking reelection to the
council. Jessup Democrat Pete Smith
ran for county executive and lost to fellow Council Member Allison Pickard, of
Millersville, in the party’s primary.
Pickard will face volunteer firefighter
Dave Crawford in the general election.
Pasadena Republican Nathan Volke,
Laurel Democrat Julie Hummer and
Broadneck Republican Amanda Fiedler
are seeking reelection to the council.
Anne Arundel County is home to
about 600,000 residents and includes
533 miles of coastline. The jurisdiction
has its own police department, fire department and public education system.

COUNCIL MEETINGS
County Council meetings are held at
7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of
every month at the Arundel Center, the
county’s administrative headquarters.
All meetings are open to the public and
streamed online. Any person can testify
on legislation, or any topic not appearing
on the agenda, by going before the council or submitting written testimony that
is posted online before each meeting.

then posted online in the following days.

department is split into four districts.

Fights fires and provides emergency aid
and life support. Also inspects businesses and residential buildings for fire
code violations and conducts educational programs on fire prevention and

Monitors public health concerns
throughout the county. Provides health
services and resources to county residents. Shares information on environmental health and recreational waterway closures.

handles applications for development or
redevelopment in the county. Handles
comprehensive planning, enforces zoning laws and oversees historic preservation.
