Free resources at Anne Arundel County libraries

Anne Arundel County is
home to 16 public library
branches, all of which offer
multiple events, school services and, of course, thousands
of books.
Christine Feldman, director
of marketing and communications for the Anne Arundel
County Public Library, emphasized the many underused resources the system
has, like its Library of Things.
The Library of Things allows cardholders to borrow
items not traditionally associated with the library, such as
birding kits, fishing poles,
ukuleles and laptop-lending
services.
“Libraries are all about
connecting people to resources both inside and outside of our buildings,” Feldman said, adding that digital
resources like databases and
e-learning materials are the
most used.
Other free resources include:
Gun safety locks are
available for visitors at least
18 years old. Each person is
limited to two per day under
a partnership with the Anne
Arundel County Department
of Health Gun Violence Intervention Task Force.
The library offers free
general admission passes to
county and state parks.
The community pantry
at Discoveries: The Library
at the Mall provides access
to hygiene products like tampons, diapers, tissues and
more. It is open on the first
Saturday of the month from
10 a.m. to noon and on the
first Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to
7 p.m. The pantry is located
at 2550 Annapolis Mall
Road.
A social worker visits
seven of the libraries on a
weekly schedule.
Little free pantries provide nonperishables at the
following libraries: Busch
Annapolis, Broadneck,
Brooklyn Park, Crofton,
Deale, Edgewater, Glen Burnie, Linthicum, Maryland
City at Russett, Odenton,
Riviera Beach, Severn and
Severna Park.
Warming relief centers
are activated for colder outdoor temperatures.
The library system also
provides resources for immigrant families and LGBTQ+
communities both on its website and in-person.
“It’s really about meeting
people where they are. What
do they need to make their
lives better?” Feldman said.
“What I most want people to
know about the libraries are
that we are more than books
and we are here to help people live better, happier, successful lives.”
