County childcare

For busy parents with school-aged
children, Anne Arundel County offers
several public childcare options. The
county operates 54 state-licensed childcare centers, the majority of which are
located in public school buildings.
Most offer before- and after-school
childcare, starting at 6:30 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. Children must be at least 5
years old and entering kindergarten by
the first day of school. All children must
be potty-trained to qualify for childcare.
The fees for each center vary, but most
charge $130 monthly for before-school
care and $365 monthly for after-school
care. Families enrolling more than one
child may qualify for a discount.
Activities in the elementary school
programs include snack, homework/literacy time, outdoor play, crafts, games,
activity stations, community service
projects and special events.
The South County Recreation Center
offers early childhood education for
prekindergarten children ages 3 to 5
years at its Harwood facility. Full-time
pre-K runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
weekdays and costs $495 per month.
Part-time pre-K runs on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m., and costs $385 per month.
The county planned to open the
Carver Early Education Center, with
120 seats for 4-year-old pre-K students,
in August.
All childcare centers have a minimum
and maximum registration, on a firstcome, first-served basis.
