Helping Veterans Heal and Thrive

espite some recent encouraging
statistics,
addiction and homelessness remain a stubborn challenge for Baltimore. No
demographic is immune to the dangers of addiction; however, veterans are disproportionally affected.
Thankfully, for more than 36 years,
The Baltimore Station has provided specialized support for veterans
and has helped turn lives around
through an innovative therapeutic
residential treatment and transitional housing program at its 90-
bed facility in South Baltimore, all
at no cost to veterans.
Kim Callari, executive director
at The Baltimore Station (www.
baltimorestation.org), notes that
her staff is trained and licensed to
deal with issues such as PTSD that
veterans experience. “For example,
the Fourth of July fireworks can be
very triggering for them,” she says.
Callari adds that most of the men
who come to The Baltimore Station
have been actively using for decades, mostly opioids and alcohol,

here for up to two years, and if they
need to stay longer, they can,” says
Callari, who adds that her organization is renovating two row homes
in West Baltimore to house female
veterans.
Callari says that providing mental and behavioral health care is
paramount to recovery. “Understanding the root of what drives
someone to want to use or drink
– especially when they’re stressed
or upset – is critical. That’s why we
have an onsite mental health ther-
apist available for the men to talk
to. While we can also connect them
with services through the VA, we’ve
found that having an appointment
just downstairs, instead of requiring a bus ride, makes them far more
likely to keep that appointment.”
Another important component is
The Baltimore Station’s Service Intensive Transitional Housing program, designed to help unemployed
homeless veterans get the tools and
skills they need to obtain a sustainable income and permanent housing. “We work with them to identi-
