GBMC HealthCare
I
n 1965, GBMC HealthCare began
with a promise to the community
to always put the patient first.
Nearly six decades later, that simple
principle continues as the driving
force behind everything we do:
“To every patient, every time, we will
provide the care that we would want
for our own loved ones.”
Today, GBMC HealthCare remains
the only community-owned system
of care to serve patients in and
surrounding Baltimore. Philanthropic
support fuels our ability to remain
independent, redesign and improve
care, and address a variety of
community healthcare needs, as they
are identified.
Substantial philanthropic backing,
accounting for more than $55
million, was instrumental in bringing
GBMC’s Promise Project to fruition.
This initiative included the Louis
and Phyllis Friedman Building,
a welcoming three-story space
complete with state-of-the-art
facilities and amenities catering
to both patients and clinical staff,
completed in November 2023, as
well as the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion,
a new centralized home for cancer
care services at GBMC that will begin
welcoming patients in early 2025.
A critical step in our effort to redesign
care is holding ourselves accountable
for a patient’s overall health from
birth to the end of life. At GBMC, we
provide evidence-based, patientcentered care for the whole patient,
which sometimes means offering
certain services and programs at no
cost, because it is the right thing to
do.
Donors make an incredible impact
on a patient’s life and health in
innumerable ways.
• As Maryland’s largest
comprehensive community cancer
program, the Sandra & Malcolm
Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC
earns patient satisfaction scores in
the 99th percentile nationally. Gifts
support excellent professionals,
remove barriers to care for those
who lack resources, and provide
needed services not covered by
insurance.
• GBMC’s Sexual Assault Forensic
Examination (SAFE) and Domestic
Violence (DV) program is available
to victims of sexual assault, child
abuse, human trafficking, and
domestic violence 24/7, 365 days a
year. Patients treated in the SAFE &
DV Program at GBMC never receive
a bill for the services received. Direct
donations or participation in GBMC’s
annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes
event support this program.
• With the help of 12 community
partners, GBMC is working to
reduce health disparities in
communities in Baltimore City.
Support here makes healthcare
easier to access and addresses social
determinants of health by providing
healthy groceries, legal help,
wellness activities, and community
outreach.
• Pediatrics is central to GBMC’s
mission. Our robust pediatric
program offers basic well child
services, such as immunizations and
physicals, in addition to emergent
care and specialized inpatient and
neonatal intensive care. Direct
donations or participation in GBMC’s
annual Father’s Day 5K support this
initiative.
• A nurse can make or break a
patient’s experience. At GBMC,
nurses practice an empathy
that truly makes a difference
in patients’ wellbeing and are
problem solvers on the front lines,
designing solutions to create better
care. Support ensures nurses are
supported and encouraged to grow
as lifelong learners.
• Gilchrist is more than just hospice.
Giving to Gilchrist means enhancing
efforts to provide expert and loving
care at every stage of serious
illness, counseling and support
services for families and access to
at-home medical care for residents
throughout Maryland.
In 2025, GBMC will celebrate 60 years
of caring for the community. We
are grateful to the community for
their philanthropic support and for
trusting us to care for you and your
family through all life’s moments.
