Backwater Books is an independent bookstore on Main Street in Old Ellicott City.
Started by husband and wife duo, Alli and Matt Krist in November 2022,
the bookstore carries a variety of titles for readers of all ages, according to
its website. Featuring comfy chairs, reading nooks and a full-service bar, the
bookstore offers patrons the opportunity to enjoy a moment of solitude with
a book or engage in community events.
Matt Krist said he and Alli opened the bookstore to create a place where
people could come together around their shared love of books.
“Alli and I were both teachers before the pandemic and we both quit our
jobs during the pandemic and thought that opening a bookshop would be
academic-adjacent,” he said. “We figured that one of the things that every
good independent bookstore [has] is a community-oriented space, so we try
to be a place that the community can gather.”
“We’re just getting started and we’re figuring it out as we go. So to receive
[best bookstore] is certainly encouraging on our end,” he said.
