THE KEY
BRIDGE
In transportation- and building-related fields, women's
share of degrees conferred is highest at the master's and
doctorate level. In the 2021-22 academic year, women
received more than 1 in 5 such degrees in transportation
and materials moving and more than 1 in 4 such degrees
in engineering technologies, which includes construction.

When the Francis Scott Key Bridge was going up a half-century ago,
around only 1% of U.S. construction workers were women. With the first
steps taken toward a replacement bridge that’s envisioned to last into
the next century, how different do crews look today? From the truck cab
to the design studio to the names of bridges themselves, we examined
how well women are represented in areas related to the Key Bridge
recovery.

Of 20 Maryland bridges that The Baltimore Sun could
determine were named expressly for at least one individual
as opposed to a family, group or established place, two honor
women, each in Frederick County.

Some have suggested the Francis Scott Key Bridge's
replacement should take a new name. If it were named for
a woman, it would join a short list.
