Anne Arundel home to Naval Academy, St. John’s College, Anne Arundel Community College

Anne Arundel County is home to
two historic four-year colleges, both in
Annapolis: St. John’s College and the
Naval Academy. The county also has
Anne Arundel Community College,
based in Arnold with satellite locations in
Hanover, Glen Burnie and Fort Meade.
NAVAL ACADEMY
Founded in 1845, the Naval Academy
trains and educates young people in
preparation for service as an officer in
the Navy or Marine Corps. Students have
the rank of midshipman in the Navy, and
commit to serve after graduation.
The campus, called the Yard, is open
to the public. Visitors must walk onto
campus and show picture ID at the
entrance at Gate 1 near City Dock.
Each year in June, the Naval Academy
welcomes 1,200 new students, known as
“plebes,” on Induction Day. Every May,
the academy graduates participate in
Commissioning Week.
Vice Admiral Yvette Davids became
Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in January. Davids is an academy
alumni and career surface warfare officer,
who was nominated as the 64th superintendent in April.
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium
is a short distance from the Yard, along
Rowe Boulevard. Home to Navy football,
the facility can seat 34,000 spectators,
and on game days the parking lot fills
with tailgaters.
ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE
Founded in 1696, St. John’s has two
campuses today, the original Annapolis
campus and a second in Santa Fe, New
Mexico. It is a private liberal arts college
that adopted the Great Books curriculum,
which focuses on writing from Western
civilization, in 1937.
The Annapolis campus inaugurated
President Nora Demleitner, the college’s
25th leader and its first female president,
in 2022.
In 2023, St. John’s College joined with
Notre Dame of Maryland University to
offer a master’s-level teaching certification program that school administrators say could help address a shortage of

certified teachers in Maryland. It pairs St.
John’s liberal arts class offerings with the
networking and internship opportunities
at the Baltimore college.
Also in 2023, the school said it raised
more than $326 million for its capital campaign to shift the college from a
tuition-based model to a philanthropic
one and increase financial aid, among
other initiatives.
On the campus is The Mitchell Gallery,
where various art exhibits are open to the
public.
ANNE ARUNDEL
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Established in 1961, Anne Arundel
Community College now serves more
than 27,000 students across several
campuses. Its main campus is in Arnold,
with satellite locations in Hanover, Fort
Meade and Glen Burnie.
The college offers 160 degrees and
certifications throughout five schools,
with remote options available.
In 2021, the school opened a Health
and Life Sciences Building to house its
nursing and physical therapy programs
and health-related studies. The new
building includes 19 biology labs,11 health
science labs and a 160-seat lecture hall.
In 2022, the school opened its Clauson
Center for Innovation and Skilled Trades,
which hosts six new programs: electrical,
forklift operator, HVAC, plumbing, welding and carpentry.
The new buildings are part of the
college’s 10-year Facilities Master Plan
to expand the college and host new
programs.
