The Goated Espresso Martini is a specialty of the
house.
downtown scene.
“It’s just what we like to eat,” Bartlett said.
“We don’t really serve much that I wouldn’t buy
myself.”
Chef Ciege “CJ” Eng developed the menu
and offers typical Mexican-American fare:
guacamole and salsa, nachos and a smothered
burrito that Bartlett counts among his personal
favorite items. That entree, which can be
ordered with tinga chicken, steak or chorizo,
comes stuffed with hunks of meat, refried black
beans, avocado, roasted red peppers and onions
before getting covered with red sauce and lime
crema, necessitating the use of a fork and knife.
There are also more unique choices, like
jalapeño poppers and chicken tinga wontons.
Recently, The Goat added two sandwiches to
the menu, Bartlett said: a green tomato BLT
and a crab salad sandwich, which has an avocado rather than a mayo base.
The drink menu has beer, wine and cocktails,
including a spicy margarita that uses a mix
from CAnE Collective, Manager Shannon Ross
said. Everything else — the juices, salad dressings and drink mixes — are made in-house,
Ross added.
One of the most popular drinks on the menu
is the Goated Espresso Martini, which uses
espresso from Rise Up Coffee Roasters. Bartlett
said he’s been with Rise Up for about 10 years;
he owns and manages five of the coffee shop
locations, where he spends most of his time.
Bartlett said the feedback on The Goat,
which opened a year ago, has been positive —
“I think everybody’s enjoying it.”
Customers are particularly drawn to the
drinks and the decor, which includes a wall of
remote-controlled candles and fresh flowers at
each table.
Bartlett, born and raised in Annapolis,
bought The Goat’s building a few years ago,
drawn to it because of its combined residential
and commercial zoning. He runs three Airbnb
units above and next to The Goat, but wanted
to try something new by opening his first sitdown service restaurant.
“It sounds corny but just to see it full and
people having fun is always exciting for us,”
Bartlett said. “It’s a cool little corner spot in the
craziness of downtown. You can kind of remove
yourself but also be close to the action.”
