RETIREMENT LIVING
Glen Meadows
Your forever home awaits
By Margit B. Weisgal, Contributing Writer
T
here comes a time when you decide to streamline your life to make your
future less stressful and complicated. Glen Meadows, a life plan community
in Glen Arm, Maryland, is an excellent choice providing distinctive residential
options and a full continuum of care as part of the network of Presbyterian Senior
Living communities.
“Based on what you want your life plan
to look like,” says Julianne Devaney, Glen
Meadows’ executive director, “we will support you with a continuum of care – a comprehensive model that allows older adults to
transition between different levels of support
as their needs change. Active or inactive, arts
or sports, whatever you enjoy the most, we’ll
help. At the same time, you’ll have maintenance-free living in either an apartment or a
patio home, while experiencing a kind and
welcoming community. Our mantra is ‘Living
Better, Growing Together,’ and our job is to
make that happen for you.”
One of Glen Meadows’ distinguishing
features is its commitment to continuity of
care. Seniors who begin their journey in independent living can transition seamlessly to
higher levels of care – such as assisted living,
memory support or skilled nursing – without
leaving the community.
“It’s this stability one gets that is essential
for both residents and their families because
they never have to leave the community,”
Devaney affirms. “It permits residents to
maintain relationships with staff and neighbors, incredibly important for their emotional
well-being. Families also appreciate not having to uproot their loved ones during what
can already be a stressful time. We even offer
a place for family members to stay when they
visit.”
“We love Glen Meadows
because of the people – we
have a lot of good friends here.
We like the comfortable size of
the community, the beautiful
grounds. We love being in the
Glen Meadows chorus.”

Devaney continues. “What does your life
plan look like? No matter what you need – a
little light housekeeping, maybe it’s meal
delivery, or services to help with the Activities
of Daily Living: Personal hygiene, dressing,
eating, transferring (moving from one place
to another), continence, ambulation (walking).
We provide it so you can stay in your home
as long as you want, as long as possible.
Should these circumstances change, we help
with that, too. However, we want you to stay
healthy and living the life you want, so we
have developed our Thrive Wellness program
for just that reason.”
Thrive Wellness is derived from the Six
Dimension Model and is consistent with the
National Wellness Institute and chosen by the
steering group based on residents’ feedback.
Addressing all six dimensions of wellness
will build a holistic sense of wellness and
fulfillment.
At Glen Meadows, all the dimensions are
woven into community life, and they all tie
together: vocational, physical, social, intellectual, spiritual and emotional. These are
intrinsic to all the programming provided. For
instance, the Physical Dimension is fulfilled
by exercise classes, the gym, and the pool
at Merritt Athletic Club (the external partner).
It has a full-time fitness director to ensure
residents are safe. There are other activities,
too: billiards, a craft room, an art studio, an
outdoor bocce area, along with a dog park
and walking paths. Pets are welcome, and
many residents have them.
Although its 350 residents are not
required to belong to a religious institution,
PSL believes in supporting an individual’s
path to find meaning or purpose. Spiritual
wellness follows the principle of tolerance
for individual beliefs, religions and spiritual
pursuits. The spiritual dimension is supported
by the full-time chaplain, a Presbyterian minister, who provides services every Sunday.
However, Glen Meadows welcomes residents
of all faiths and backgrounds. Each community offers chaplain services, worship opportunities, and spiritual counseling. A Catholic
priest comes in to serve Mass.
Living at Glen Meadows
Once you’ve chosen your residence, you
may want to get involved with the community. Residents run and manage their own
resident association and set up committees
for various projects. Often, the residents will
suggest activities or events and the manage-
