org/seniors/resources-for-seniors/)

Seals and provides training to
users of iPhones and iPads to use
phone apps, email and connect with
Facetime. It has easy-to-access videos and printed instructions.
• Senior Living.org (www.seniorliving.
org/tech: This website covers a lot of
information for seniors, but since this
is for technology, it provides easy-tounderstand information and education: A Guide to Useful Technology
for Older Adults in 2025. There are
also helpful recommendations for just
about everything you would need as
a senior.
• You can also check with a senior
center near you. Some have classes.
You can also ask them to hold classes. If you are interested, you can be
sure others would be interested also.
As you start to use technology – or
even if you don’t – older adults are a
prime target for scammers. Land line or
mobile phone, it doesn’t matter, and if
you also have a computer or tablet, those
are just more opportunities to take your
money.
I write about it often; indeed, to quote
Maryland’s former Attorney General, Brian
Frosh, “Whenever we build a 10-foot wall,
the scammers build an 11-foot ladder.”
One piece of advice is the best hedge
against someone scamming you: If you
get a phone call and the number is not in
your contacts, DO NOT ANSWER. Let it
go to voicemail. Valid callers will leave a
message; scammers will not.
This is a fast-changing area. New technology is available almost daily along with
services specifically targeted to seniors.
Ask friends or someone who is good with
computers and technology before adding
or changing anything. Alternatively, contact a reliable computer repair shop or a
store that sells computers to make sure
you understand the product or service.
If you ever have a question, visit
the Maryland Attorney General’s website:
www.marylandattorneygeneral.gov. Go to
Quick Links and you will see A Consumer
Guide for Marylanders, a booklet which
has great information. And if you have
even an inkling that something is off,
hang up the phone or close the door.
On social media, block contact. In the
same Quick Links section, sign up for
Consumer Alerts.
